A popular mood known as “Young America” emerged in the 1840s. Its adherents brashly promoted territorial and economic expansion and development of the United States, but displayed little concern or awareness of the practical consequences of such actions. OSullivan was penned for the term manifest destiny(the popular belief that the U.S. had a divine mission to extend its power and civilization across the breadth of North America) which characterized the time period, along with westward expansion. The U.S. extended all the way to the Pacific and Southward into Mexico, Cuba, and even Central America. Nationalism, Population increase, rapid economic development, technological advances, and reform ideals were all factors that contributed to the manifest destiny.
